The Old Railway to Wootton Stream and Holmsley Tea Rooms

What a Wednesday in July!

Last Wednesday the store owner Jon went on his annual friend’s Family bike ride day out. The kids are all about 2 now, so still need a nap in the middle of the day. They set out nice and early, carrying plenty of supplies for the planned ride ahead. They opted for E-Bikes once again, as for some this is the only ride they do all year!

  • Which Route did you guys do?

Jon opted to take them down the famous ‘Old Railway’ trail, as it has plenty of exciting things for the kids to see and do along the trail. It is very safe and mostly flat, but this does depend on the distance chosen, they chose to do the 11 miles to wootton stream which was the halfway point. It also as Holmsley Tea Rooms just 3 miles in.

  • What’s on the route?

The Old Railway route leaves the village on a very quiet leafy lane, passing ponies just seconds from the shop! It’s about a 3 minute cycle to the start of the track, and then you are on the flat and beautiful Railway trail which is now pristine gravel. After about 3 miles this meets the Old Station Tea rooms, however Jon planned to visit there on the way back for lunch. The main aim was to get everyone to Wootton Stream within about an hours cycle, and it worked! The kids were able to get out and play, paddling in the stream and exploring the woodlands around it. The group were told to bring blankets and snacks, so that they could stay and enjoy it for a good hour or so. Once the kids were fulfilled, and the parents were starting to get hungry, they made their way back to the Holmsley Station House Tea Rooms. The tea rooms has all the sort of refreshments needed for a cycle ride, and wed especially recommend the Station Master’s Rarebit! There were plenty of Horses on route, and on another day there would be Cows and Deer aplenty!

  • How Long was it?

To Wootton Stream or the Rising Sun Inn the total distance is 11 miles all in, with these stops being the halfway point. All in all the group were probably only cycling for an hour and a half, but there were plenty of stops taken so the trip took about 3 hours.
